Farm to ease. Persephone provides the perfect backdrop for plain air painters to connect with art.

Gather up your favourite paint supplies and your best hat and step outside with us, into the fresh air of the Sunshine Coast, and make something all your own.

Bring whatever medium you love, all skill levels welcome . Join William Speake and featured artist Carly Cheung for an afternoon of painting outdoors — fresh air, natural beauty, and a community of fellow creators, together.

Carly, a gouache painter, will share a demonstration of how she approaches a painting before we all settle in with our own materials, side by side.

Come as You Are

You're a beginner?

Come as you are. Carly will get you going. This is the perfect place to pick up a brush for the first time.

More experienced?

Come paint outdoors, meet other artists, and bring home something new —a change of scenery and good company.

Strayed from Art?

This is your way back in — low pressure, no expectations, just you and a brush again.

Come away with new paintings; a new way of seeing; something you didn't know you needed; and a fire that doesn't go out

This experience was made for you.

Meet Your Guides

Shirley Campbell

GOUACHE ARTIST - TEACHER

Carly is a Vancouver-based gouache painter and VFX artist. On weekends you'll find her outside at local spots around the city, painting from life. In this event, she will show you how to read a scene fast, break it down into simple shapes, and build a composition that holds together.

William Speake

WATERCOLOUR ARTIST - PHOTOGRAPHER - FOUNDER VISUAL STORYTELLERS' COLLECTIVE

William Speake is an airline pilot as well as a watercolour artist and photographer. He picked up a brush during COVID with no background and no talent — just need. He painted every day for two years. He sold paintings. He built something he didn't know he was building. He built the Visual Storytellers’ Collective around one belief: creativity belongs to everyone.

What past participants have said

I learned so much about shapes and shadows and reflection, and so I'm excited to take that back and try that in my own work.

-K. Brown

The small group was amazing. This was everything I enjoy and William selects beautiful locations where your painting will turn out.

-A. Brunning

I have worked with William for several years now both as an instructor and aparticipant, he really works hard to bring lots of value and fun to all his events. It's a perfect learning environment. He's a very good host.
